SCC Welcomes Obakunle Akinlana

obakunle(January 16, 2013) Stanly Community College (SCC) is pleased to host African Folktale Storyteller Obakunle Akinlana on Wednesday, January 23, at 12:00 noon in the Dennis Auditorium on the Albemarle campus. Mr. Akinlana will also perform at the E.E. Waddell Community Center at 6:30 p.m. on January 23.  Both of these events are free and open to the public.

Akinlana has performed as a storyteller, lecturer, and percussionist throughout the United States and West Africa since 1971. He uses drums, shekeres, and other African musical instruments to present a fun and exciting cultural experience for all people of all ages.

This SCC performance will be in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and is sponsored by Momentum – a Male Minority Mentoring student oriented program.  Momentum will be sponsoring other presentations at the college in February to recognize Black History month.

“2013 will mark my 25th year as a professional storyteller in North Carolina,” states Akinlana. “I have shared my stories and music with thousands of wonderful people throughout this beautiful state.” Akinlana plans to visit all 100 counties in North Carolina in an effort to share African culture while supporting literacy in schools and communities.
