National Phi Beta Lambda Week

(February 6, 2013) Did you know...

  • Phi Beta Lambda is a national organization for college students. Full- and part-time, day and evening, seated and online students may join.
  • The emphasis is leadership training and business awareness. All students are welcome but Business Administration, Accounting, and Technology students are particularly encouraged to participate.
  • The PBL theme for 2012-13 is “Igniting Innovation!” The emphasis is on assisting students to be successful in a changing economy and work environment.
  • The Stanly Community College chapter was chartered in 1974 and has had state competitive winners advance to national competition 36 of 38 years!
  • Competitions (some written tests and some performance/presentation/interview ones) are held in nearly 40 areas of leadership and business at the state conference in April in Charlotte. Being a member of PBL and being the college’s entry in an event is a major boost to a student’s resume – and, of course, winning looks good, too!
  • The SCC PBL chapter was designated a state and national “Gold Seal Chapter” for 2011-2012.
  • Former SCC PBL chapter presidents include Albemarle City Council Member Martha Sue Hall and Albemarle Downtown Development Association Director Kathy Almond. The current president is Courtney Seidenschmidt, an Associate of Arts major; Courtney also serves as state PBL secretary.
  • For additional information, contact Mr. Hazlett at or 704-991-0216. Ms. McIlwaine, Ms. Amirtharaj, Mr. Sperling, and Mr. Misenheimer can also talk with you about joining.
  • Membership deadline for this year is February 28.
  • Check out the SCC PBL Facebook page and the state website (
  • PBL is the college level of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA); the national website is and then there’s a PBL link at the top of the home page with guidelines for the competitive events.
  • Join today. You can be a part of this year’s winning SCC PBL chapter!
