SCC Welcomes a Global Visitor

jeyhun(March 6, 2013) It is an honor that Stanly Community College (SCC) was the first choice as a host college for Jeyhun Atayev from the Republic of Azerbaijan.  This visit was made possible by the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship Program and the Community Colleges for International Development, Inc. (CCID).   The objective is to provide a chosen Humphrey Fellow with a one-week learning and sharing experience as part of a community college residency pilot project.

Mr. Atayev is currently a student at the School of Public Affairs at the University of Minnesota, and his main focus of study is public-media relations, sustainable business development, and continuous improvement of public/private business and government partnerships.   He had the opportunity to visit the Stanly County Chamber of Commerce, Leadership Stanly, and the Albemarle Rotary Club. He also called on the SCC Small Business Center to gain an understanding of economic development in a small town of community interests.

Back home, Jeyhun Atayev is the Head of Project of the American Chamber of Commerce in Azerbaijan (AmCham) and Chief Editor of the AmCham Official Publication – IMPACT Magazine.   “I see this community college residency program as an invaluable opportunity to expand my knowledge of the business development approach that is different than a university,” commented Mr. Atayev. “The community college experience has been very beneficial to me because it revolves around a small community that lives together, works together and networks with each other for a common goal.”

Stanly Community College welcomed Mr. Atayev on campus as he presented an overview of his country, his studies and his work abroad.  The SCC Marketing department provided the visitor with campus publications and promotional items used for advertising the college in the community.  They also gave a studio presentation of the current filming and programming efforts for SCC-TV Channel 21.

“We are so delighted that Jeyhun chose Stanly Community College to visit and fulfill his Humphrey Fellows obligation,” stated Patricia Horner, Global Education Coordinator at SCC. “It was a pleasure to invite him into my home and our community as part of his residency program.  Jeyhun’s knowledge of international economic development is inspiring, and I feel that this was a wonderful and low-cost opportunity to expose our students and our community to an international visitor.”
