SCC Recognizes Dr. W. Dallas Herring Day

sccnewsicon(March 12, 2013) Stanly Community College (SCC) held a special presentation to honor Dr. W. Dallas Herring on Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at noon. All 58 community colleges across the state of NC held events on this day to honor his lifelong achievements and birthday, as well as to unveil a portrait of Dr. Herring in celebration of the NC Community College System’s 50th Anniversary.

Dr. Herring, a Duplin County native, is considered the philosophical godfather of the state's Community College System. He wanted all North Carolinians to have the opportunity to obtain an education. Dr. Herring was appointed chair of the State Board of Education and held the position from 1957-77. During his time on the Board, his work was instrumental in the creation of the community college system.

Dr. Myra Furr, Dean of Student Life and Learning, introduced the legacy of Dr. Herring and detailed his accomplishments. Tanya Milton, SCC student and Student Government Association (SGA) Secretary, read an excerpt of Dr. Herring’s philosophy of education. Student Speaker Traci Smith gave an inspiring speech about her past and the educational path on which she has embarked.

According to Dr. Scott Ralls, NC Community College System President, “Dr. Herring’s legacy has brought us to where we are today –one of the most comprehensive community college systems in the nation, educating people of all ages, training the state’s workforce, and providing college transfer opportunities.”

Dr. Herring died January 5, 2007, at the age of 90, but his legacy lives on: “We must take people where they are and carry them as far as they can go within the assigned functions of the system.”
