Local High Schools Compete in Electronics Blast

Electronics Blast 2013

(March 27, 2013) This year marks the 14th anniversary of the Electronics Blast competition sponsored by Michelin North America located in Norwood, NC and hosted by Stanly Community College (SCC). Students from North, South, and West Stanly High Schools competed during the event held at the SCC Albemarle campus on March 15, 2013.

During this daylong event, students are tested on their knowledge in electronics engineering with hands-on projects and written exams. Awards were given to the highest testing students in each skill level and the high school that accumulates the most points wins the Top Gun Award. This year’s Top Gun recipient was South Stanly High School and Bill Sorenson, South Stanly electronics instructor.

The awards ceremony began with Electronics Instructor Mr. Jeff Swaringen welcoming students and guests to the event. Michelin Technical Services Manager Mr. Dhumketu Patel spoke to the students about how the job market is growing in the electronics field and how a higher degree can increase their earning power. Mr. Patel commented, “A part of Michelin Norwood facility’s vision statement is to make a difference in our community. Investing in the education of students in our county ensures that we are helping develop the employees needed for the mutual success of Michelin and Stanly County for the foreseeable future.” Following the presentation, Mr. Patel assisted by Electronics and Networking Instructors Mr. Dan Parmer and Mr. Trent Helms, presented medals to each winning contestant and the winning high school.
