Farewell Reception Held for Outgoing Trio of Trustees

SCC Board Members(September 12, 2013) Stanly Community College (SCC) held a reception on August 12, 2013 to honor three long-time Board of Trustees who ended their terms with the College. These outstanding individuals, with a cumulative service of 75 years, will be missed by their colleagues, students, and the community. The reception was a bittersweet moment for many in attendance.

Elbert L. (Whit) Whitley, Jr. served on the board from 1977-2013. He is currently the longest serving trustee, as well as the trustee chair, a post he held from 1983-2012. Mr. Whitley attended his first board meeting on July 20, 1977, just six years after the College was chartered and five years after classes began. He has served as an appointee of the Stanly County Board of Education and as mayor of the city of Albemarle. He is the retired owner of Albemarle Retread.

Tom Hawkins served on the board from 1990-2013, and has also served as co-vice chair from 2012-2013. Tom was originally appointed by the Governor in 1990 for one term. He was appointed by the Stanly County Commissioners in 1997. Tom is retired from the Chevrolet Division of General Motors.

Dr. W. Davis Fort, a retired OB-GYN physician, and a Governor's selection, has served on the board from 1997-2013. Dr. Fort was instrumental in advocating the 21st Century Scholars Program at SCC and has been a tireless promoter of education. Each was presented a United States flag that was flown over the United States Capitol on June 30, 2013, the day their terms expired. A plaque was also presented to them that stated the number of years of service to the board.

SCC President Dr. Brenda Kays expressed appreciation and gratitude to each of the trustees for their commitment and devotion to the College. “We are very grateful to these retiring trustees for their devotion, guidance and dedication over the years. They have made an enduring and lasting mark on Stanly Community College. Due to their time, energy, and leadership, the College remains one of the very best in the North Carolina Community College System.”
