The Smith Brothers Establish Endowed Scholarship at SCC

Smith Donors(October 17, 2013) Stanly Community College (SCC) is pleased to announce the establishment of the Charlie B. and Ruth Carpenter Smith Scholarship. The scholarship was announced during the annual Stanly Heritage Endowed Scholarship banquet held on Thursday, September 26, 2013, on the Albemarle campus.

Roger Smith, Sr., and Wade M. Smith established this scholarship in memory of their parents. Both Roger and Wade practice law at Tharrington Smith, LLP, in Raleigh, North Carolina. Their legal expertise has been included in such publications as Business North Carolina’s Legal Elite, Best Lawyers® in America, and Super Lawyers.

Wade and Roger Smith were the guest speakers during SCC’s Heritage banquet, and spoke about their childhood while growing up in Stanly County. They both have fond memories of Dr. H.T. “Toby” Webb, Jr., (a.k.a. Coach) while attending Albemarle public schools. They recalled when their parents were both in their 60’s and attended Stanly Community College to earn their high school diploma.

Roger Smith, Sr., was born in Albemarle, North Carolina, attended Albemarle public schools and was awarded a Morehead Scholarship at the University of North Carolina—Chapel Hill, where he received his B.A. degree in English in 1963.

During his undergraduate years, he served as president of the freshman class, was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece, and, in 1963, was co-captain of the football team. Roger has focused his practice on trials and appeals, and has served as lead counsel in numerous cases in state and federal appellate courts. He is a fellow in both the American College of Trial Lawyers and the American Academy of Appellate Lawyers. In addition, he has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since its inception in 1983. Roger has a deep love for literature and writing, and is the author of numerous professional papers, essays, short stories and poems.

Wade Smith has been one of North Carolina’s best known and most acclaimed lawyers for nearly 50 years. His trials are recounted in books, magazines and journals. Wade was born in 1937 in Albemarle, North Carolina. At UNC he excelled in academics and athletics, serving as one of the captains of the football team and winning many honors as an athlete. After completing his undergraduate work and earning a B.A. in English, Wade attended the University of North Carolina School of Law, graduating in 1963. His cases offer a fine collection of North Carolina Courtroom lore. In 1979, Wade served as counsel to Dr. Jeffrey McDonald in the much studied and discussed Green Beret Murder case. Most recently he was lead counsel for Collin Finnerty, one of three young men accused in the Duke Lacrosse Case. To commemorate the body of work Wade has completed, the North Carolina Bar Association established in the spring of 2008 the annual Wade M. Smith award “for a Criminal Defense Attorney Who Exemplifies the Highest Ideals of the Profession.” In summer, 2008, the North Carolina Bar Association presented Wade with the H. Brent McKnight Renaissance Lawyer Award which annually goes to “an attorney whose trustworthiness, respectful and courteous treatment of all people, enthusiasm for intellectual achievement and commitment to excellence in work and service to the profession and community, inspires others.”

The establishment of the Charles B. and Ruth Carpenter Smith Scholarship emphasizes the Smith Brothers lifelong belief in the value of education.
