SCC Announces Art Contest Winners

Kelly Story(March 21, 2014) Stanly Community College (SCC) announced the winners of the eighth annual art show during an opening reception held on March 18. Every year, the College encourages students, faculty, and staff to showcase their creative artwork with other artists and viewers.

Ashley Lathe, SCC Art Instructor, was selected to judge the artwork on display which included oil paintings, pencil drawings, sculptures, digital art, photography, and much more. Mr. Lathe noted special details about the pieces that he chose. “This photograph [Through the Pane], had layers of composition, both symmetrical and asymmetrical. A simple image of an object, the tree, was made modular by the window frame. It all wants to be centered, but the image has been shifted upper left, creating tension that keeps the ensemble in a state of flux despite the serenity of the subject matter.”

The 2014 winners included: 1st place – Kelly Story with her digital photograph titled, Through the Pane, 2nd place – Kelly Brown with her acrylic painting titled, Life of a Hummingbird, and 3rd place – Dan Wray with his digital photograph titled, Plantation Landscape.

Kelly Story commented, “Happy accidents happen! What started as a test photo soon opened itself into a story. After a bout with depression this image appeared to me as what my world was for a while…a dark room with a bright outlook. Through the lens of my camera is where I found release. In every image, there’s a story. I’m honored to receive this award.”

Honorable mentions were awarded to Andell McCoy for her acrylic painting called Dance Utterance; Merlin Amirtharaj for her digital photograph called Twilight in Albemarle; and P.J. Ingram with a digital illustration named Petal. Nettie Amirtharaj received the “President’s Choice” award for her digital photograph named, Door to Dachua.
