WWII Veterans to be Honored at SCC Luncheon

sccnewsicon(April 24, 2014) Stanly Community College (SCC) will honor WWII Veterans during the annual WWII luncheon to be held on Tuesday, May 27th, in the Webb Student Center located on the Albemarle campus. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. and lunch will be served promptly at noon. Uwharrie Bank / Strategic Investment Advisors has agreed to sponsor the WWII Luncheon.

This year’s speaker will be Dan Hazlett, SCC English Instructor. Mr. Hazlett has taught at Stanly Community College for 42 years, including a Humanities Film Appreciation course. He earned his Master in Journalism/English from Marshall University in West Virginia with additional coursework at NC State University and University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Mr. Hazlett will discuss how wars, particularly WWII, has been portrayed in movies, with emphasis upon those that have received recognition from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars).

The Stanly County WWII recognition program was first held in 2004 with over 255 veterans in attendance. That group is rapidly decreasing as the passage of time claims the lives of more WWII Veterans.

All World War II Veterans are invited to attend this luncheon. Veterans are asked to contact Donna Jones at Stanly Community College (704) 991-0217, to reserve a seat.
