Stanly CC Phi Beta Lambda Named One of Nation’s Best – Again!

National PBL Awards(July 16, 2014) The Stanly Community College (SCC) Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter was designated a “Gold Seal Chapter” at the organization’s recent National Leadership Conference. It was the nineteenth consecutive year for SCC to receive the special award.

Nearly 2000 delegates met at the Opryland Hotel in Nashville for general sessions and workshops on leadership and business, as well as the PBL national competitive events.

At the opening of the conference, groups not to exceed 10 percent of the nation’s total number of chapters are presented with the “Gold Seal Chapter” award. In addition to a chapter plaque, delegates receive special gold ribbons for their name badges.

“Receiving the national Gold Seal Chapter award was our goal since it would be such a good conclusion to our group’s 40th Anniversary celebrations throughout the 2013-2014 year,” commented Chuck VanHoose, a chapter officer and newly-elected state president.

In competitive events, three Stanly students who had won state competition last spring received “Top Ten” recognition at the national level.

Brandon Harkey was ninth place in the Job Interview event.

Katrina Sams placed eighth in the Organization Behavior and Leadership event.

Nathan Greene placed third in the International Business event.

VanHoose and Ms. Sams, state secretary, presided over state meetings throughout the conference. Other state officers include Historian Jesse Crump from Pfeiffer University and students from Appalachian State University, Campbell University, and Barton College.

At the conference business session, delegates elected Beau Cobb from Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island as the national president.

The closing session of the conference began with the induction of one member from each state into the national “Who’s Who in Phi Beta Lambda.” North Carolina’s recipient was Brandon Harkey from SCC. Harkey served as chapter president and a state officer in 2012-13. He has won state First Place awards in Business Decision Making and Future Business Executive events, and he was the president of the SCC Parliamentary Procedures team that won the 2012 and 2013 state competitions and placed third at the national level in 2013.

Following the collegiate level conference, over 10,000 high school students traveled to Nashville for the secondary Future Business Leaders of America National Leadership Conference.

“Stepping up to the Challenge” is the national PBL and FBLA theme for the up-coming year. Membership is open to all students interested in leadership and business.

“Again, all of us who were PBL members during the year and especially those of us who attended the national conference appreciate the support and encouragement of the SCC faculty, staff, and administration,” VanHoose commented. “It has been an exciting year as we celebrated the 40th Anniversary for the chapter, and we look forward to another successful year as classes begin this fall.”
