New CNC Machinist Training to Start This Fall

Ryan Love(July 22, 2014) Stanly Community College (SCC) will begin a new Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist training program starting August 12, 2014. There will be day and evening class times available.

The College has hired Ryan Love to be the Lead Instructor for this program. Mr. Love graduated from Central Piedmont Community College with an associate’s degree in Computer-Integrated Machining. He has worked at Carnes-Miller Gear as a machinist/programmer/setup operator and at Murata Machinery as a CNC Proposal Specialist prior to coming to SCC.

Students who complete this two-semester program will have completed 408 contact hours. Courses include OSHA certification, Blue Print Reading, Manual Mill and Lathe, CAM Programming Mill and Lathe, CNC Lathe and Mill Operation, Intro to LEAN manufacturing and much more.

The day class of CNC Machinist Level I will run from August 12 to December 4 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The hours are 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. with one hour for lunch.

The evening class will run from August 14 to December 15, Monday through Thursday each week. The hours are 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. Both classes will meet on the Albemarle campus.

This training program is unique to the region in that it partners with local industry to provide basic, CNC and alternative machining training proven to be essential in the workplace.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor/Bureau of Labor Statistics, job opportunities for machinists should be excellent, as employers continue to value the wide-ranging skills of these workers that are capable of performing modern production techniques in a machine shop. Manufacturers will continue to rely heavily on skilled machinists, as they invest in new equipment, modify production techniques, and implement product design changes more rapidly.
