PBL Receives National Recognition
National “Gold Seal Chapters” were announced at the opening session of the conference, which drew nearly 2000 delegates from around the country. SCC Chapter President Mark Mauldin accepted the plaque, and each of the ten SCC delegates received gold ribbons for their name badges.
At the conclusion of the conference, 27 national members were honored with induction into “Who’s Who in Phi Beta Lambda.” Selected from North Carolina was John Anderson, a May graduate of Stanly Community College who is now enrolled in classes at Pfeiffer University. Anderson is state president and presided over the North Carolina PBL meetings held during the conference. The conference included motivational speakers, leadership workshops, competitive events, and the election of national officers. Delegates selected Spencer Behrend, a student at Utah State University, as president for 2010-2011.
Throughout the spring, state competitions were held to determine the two who would advance to the national competition. SCC students represented North Carolina in the Business Decision Making, Cyber Security, Digital Video Production, Marketing, Microeconomics, Parliamentary Procedure, Networking Concepts, Sales Presentation, Statistical Analysis, and Future Business Executive events.
Students may enter two events, and Anthony Ingram won state competitions in both the Cyber Security
and Networking Concepts events to place in the Top Ten at the national level. His Third Place Cyber Security award included a $300 cash prize and letter of commendation from the CIA.
The Digital Video Production team of Bryan Lowe, Bryan DeCastro, and John Anderson received Eighth Place in that event. The team submitted a pre-judged video and then did a presentation for judges on their production process.
Stephanie Roach and John Anderson were two of only seven members throughout the country recognized for completing the highest Presidential Level of the organization’s Career and Membership Achievement Program (CMAP). Among the CMAP activities was planning an international business trip, preparing a digital portfolio, and completing an entrepreneurship activity.
The delegation also included Jessica Burnette, Natalie Tarleton, Lisa Tarleton, Kelsey Flowe, and Adviser Dan Hazlett from the college. The Stanly Community College chapter was chartered in 1975 and has had members qualify for national competition 34 of those 36 years.
“Breaking Barriers” was announced as the 2010-2011 theme. PBL membership is open to full- and part-time students in seated and online classes, particularly those in the Business Administration, Accounting, and Information Systems/Technology curriculums.
“SCC is certainly proud of our Phi Beta Lambda chapter and the ongoing recognition the members bring to the college and the community,” commented SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor. “The state and national awards reflect the quality of our programs, the enthusiasm of our student leaders, and the dedication of our faculty and staff who work with them to provide such opportunities and make sure they’re prepared to compete at the state and national level.”
