Carolina Auction Academy Instructor Brings Home International Award

eli_detweillerjrCarolina Auction Academy Instructor, Eli Detweiler Jr., won the International Auctioneer Champion (IAC) contest held in Greensboro on July 15, 2010. The International Auctioneers Competition is part of the annual National Auctioneers Association (NAA) conference/show, and is celebrating sixty-one years. This was the first time the conference was held in North Carolina.

Eli Detweiler Jr., of Ruffin, NC, grew up in Wisconsin and entered the auction profession early in life. After completing auction school, he furthered his education by attending CAI (Certified Auctioneer Institute), a very intensive three year program.

To win the contest, Eli competed against fifty-eight colleagues from across the United States, Canada and South Africa. Thousands of fellow auctioneers and their families watched as first elimination rounds judged the contenders on their selling ability, product knowledge, presentation and bid calling skills. All but fifteen auctioneers were eliminated and moved on to the finals where the contestants did an interview and auctioned three items in front of a panel of judges and hundreds of spectators. Only the best of the best made the finals and that portion of the contest was streamed-live over the internet.

Competition for this event is extremely competitive. It was the ninth year Eli entered the contest. One contestant had entered for twenty-two years and made the finals, but never the top three positions: Champion, Reserve Champion and Runner Up.

Eli Detweiler is a well respected auto and live stock auctioneer business in North Carolina, and has also performed in a black light musical in Paris, France, using his chant as the “music” for the event.

Eli joined Carolina Auction Academy in 2006 and has been a great asset to the program. He was the 2000 NC auctioneer champion and a state champion for Wisconsin. In 2011, he will take the reins as the President of the Auctioneer Association of NC. Stanly Community College (SCC) and the Carolina Auction Academy staff are proud of Eli and his promotion of the auction method of marketing and wish him continued success.

CAA is a comprehensive auctioneer school exclusive to SCC and accredited by the North Carolina Auctioneer Licensing Board, and the South Carolina Auctioneer Commission. CAA’s next class begins August 23, 2010. For more information, call (704) 991-0142 or visit our website.
