Overview of Services
Stanly Community College students, faculty, and staff who use the Crutchfield Education Center (Crutchfield) have the same library privileges as students on the Albemarle campus. Since the library in Albemarle has most of the books and other materials, items may have to be sent to Crutchfield. Simply call the main library on the Albemarle campus (704-991-0259) and ask that the material you need be sent to Crutchfield. Books and AVs. The online catalog shows what the library owns, as well as availability and location. Items at Crutchfield will be indicated by CFIELD. All items may be checked out except reference books (REF or CFIELD-REF). Material in reference books may be photocopied.
Periodicals. Because the Crutchfield library subscribes to only a few magazines and newspapers, the best way to search and retrieve articles from periodical sources is through the NC LIVE and SIRS databases, which provide full-text access to thousands of magazines.
Databases. Icons on the library home page are links to (1) the online catalog, materials at Stanly Community College and many other community colleges in the state; (2) NC LIVE, a huge database of databases that offers newspapers, magazines, e-books, audiobooks, PBS videotapes, and much more; STAT!Ref, an e-book collection of medical and nursing information; SIRS, a database of periodical information smaller than NC LIVE and easier to use; Literary Reference Center, which provides information on books and authors; and NC KNOWS, 24/7 access to a live reference librarian in North Carolina.
IDs/passwords and Library Cards. IDs and passwords for off-campus use of the databases are given to students, faculty, and staff with library cards. Apply for a card with the staff member on duty at either Crutchfield or Albemarle.
Library staff members are always willing to assist students in the use of the online databases, either in person or by phone.
