Academic Experience: Classroom Culture

classroomThe approach to teaching, course content, and learning materials in classes is varied and may be very different from what you have experienced in the past. Teachers often use interactive teaching methods to engage students in discussions. They may ask individual students specific questions or ask the entire class to respond to a concept. Students' participation in classroom discussions is often expected and may affect their grades.

Many teachers also assign group or team projects where students must work together to complete the assignment. Grading is based on the group's performance and not on an individual student's contribution.

Often instead of textbooks that provide an overview of a subject, teachers may assign students a number of different types of readings. Rather than memorize information for later testing, students are often assigned papers where they must synthesize the learning materials and present their own ideas on the subject.
