Open Stacks

library stacks Unlike many libraries in other countries, most American libraries have what are referred to as "open stacks." This means that library patrons can walk up to the shelves of books and get the books they want. You do not need to ask a librarian to do this for you, although they will help you if you cannot find a book.

While this gives users more independence, it also means that you need to know how to search for books in the library’s online catalog and how the library is organized in order to find the books you want.
