LRC Guidelines
The public services area of the LRC is intended to provide users with a quiet area for research and study. Users are expected to respect the needs of others and help maintain a pleasant area for everyone. We ask that patrons follow these guidelines when using the LRC facilities and computers:

Library Card: Request a free library ID card at the circulation desk. You will need it to check out materials.

Help: If you need assistance of any type, ask the staff for help. They are here to help you find the book or magazine you need or the Internet site you are searching for and to help you learn to use the online catalog and the library in general.

Internet Use: The Internet is intended for research; inappropriate use (such as the viewing of pornographic sites) is prohibited.

Chat Rooms and Games on the Internet:
These activities are very time consuming and bandwidth is limited. Because students are often waiting to use the computers for research purposes, please do not use the LRC computers for chat rooms and games.

Downloading: Because of computer viruses and possible damage to the hard drives, please do not download programs or other information into the computers.

Photocopy and Printing Charges: Remember to pay 10 cents per page at the circulation desk for printing from the computers and photocopier.

Your attention to the needs and schedules of other library users will be appreciated.

Interlibrary loans
If materials needed by patrons are not available in SCC's library collection, the interlibrary loan networks may be used. There are two methods for interlibrary loan (ILL) requests:

Online Catalog
The WebCat online card catalog shows holdings for most community colleges across North Carolina. Patrons may request materials from other libraries through WebCat. Materials are shipped to the LRC and then can be checked out by the patron. Please ask for assistance with this procedure if you are not familiar with WebCat. Requested materials will take at least three to five days to arrive.

** You must have your library ID with you to request an interlibrary loan through WebCat.

Interlibrary Loan Network
If a patron cannot find the desired materials through the WebCat online catalog, the North Carolina interlibrary loan network can be used to request materials from other types of libraries. Please ask a librarian for assistance with this type of ILL request. Requests will take at least five to seven days to arrive, perhaps longer. In some cases, libraries charge a fee for a loan.

Interlibrary loan requests should be made at least two weeks in advance of the date the material is needed. Borrowers are responsible for photocopying or loan fees and for any overdue fines incurred through the North Carolina interlibrary loan network.

Copy Services
A photocopier for duplication of print materials is available in the library. The charge is 5 cents per page. Please pay for this service at the circulation desk.

Media Type Loan Periods Overdue Fines
Books 21 days 10 cents/day
Books on Tape (audiocassettes) 21 days 10 cents/day
Reference Materials LRC use only N/A
Videotapes and DVDs 3 days 50 cents/day
Reserve Materials from Instructors Instructor preference 25 cents/day

The maximum fine for overdue materials is $5. The cost of replacement will be charged for lost materials.

Patrons with overdue library materials will not be allowed to check out additional materials until the overdue materials have been returned or renewed and all fines have been paid. Students who do not clear their library records will not be allowed to register or graduate.

Faculty may request extended loan periods for materials needed for instruction. Faculty members are not charged overdue fines but are requested to return materials promptly if needed by other faculty or students.

Orientation
Group orientation sessions designed to familiarize students with the services and resources of the LRC may be arranged by contacting the library staff. Faculty should make arrangements for orientation sessions in advance of the desired date if possible in order to avoid conflicts with other classes and to ensure that adequate staff will be available.

Individual assistance for students working on assignments is available during both day and evening hours. If specific books or materials are to be used by an entire class, faculty should request that the materials be placed on reserve so that all students will have access to them.

Classes are welcome in the library. The instructor should notify the library staff in advance because of space and staffing needs.
