Hi, I am Julie Carpenter, Coordinator of Service Learning and Cooperative Education at Stanly Community College. Our service learning students in the spring of 2007 semester alone contributed 570 hours or the equivalent of fourteen weeks of full-time work to our non-profit community partners in Stanly and the surrounding counties.
The participation of our students in the Service Learning program is voluntary and is well accepted by our community partners, Board of Trustees, Administration, Service Learning Executive Committee, faculty, and staff.
Our students gain a sense of understanding of what it means to be civically engaged in their community and have a better understanding of some of the obstacles that the citizens of our county are faced with on a daily basis.
Each semester ends with a Reflection Session that allows all of the service learners to come together and share their experiences. The heart-warming experiences they reflect on allow all of the students to learn from others' experiences.
