Service Learning

SCC Service Learning Mission Statement
The purpose of Service Learning at SCC is to enhance students’ learning by reinforcing the theories and ideas they learn in the classroom with the practical, worthwhile experiences they receive while providing service to the community. Students will apply classroom knowledge during experiential leaning that values civic responsibility, diversity, and personal development.

Service Learning Defined
Service learning is the combination of community service and classroom instruction with a focus on critical, reflective thinking as well as personal and civic responsibility. It is an actively engaged learning experience, educating students in social and civic responsibilities while offering personal growth.

Service learning will allow students to gain valuable workplace experience, classroom credit, and an appreciation for the greater community and world around them. Service learning students will have the opportunity to become more proficient employees and more culturally sensitive citizens.

History of the SCC Service Learning Program
As part of its decennial reaccreditation process by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), Stanly Community College was charged with developing a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) to strengthen student learning.

In the spring of 2003, the QEP team began the deliberation process to determine the focus of the QEP. Co-chairs Cindy Dean and Dennis Souther emphasized that, per SACS guidelines, the QEP must be student-centered and faculty driven.

Stanly Community College has made the collective decision to add a new dimension of community to our middle name. In this frantic, often indifferent and disconnected world into which we send our students, service to individual, society, and the greater world has become a scarce and valuable commodity. Through selecting service learning as our QEP and focus for the coming years, Stanly Community College is prepared to encourage our students to experience beyond themselves and beyond the familiar. Stanly Community College students will have the opportunity to learn what power they have as individuals to make a difference in their worlds and how what they learn in the classroom fits into the intricate, dynamic puzzle called “real life.”
