Do you have an eye for design?
Creative. Energetic. Open-minded. These are just some of the traits used to describe those who pursue careers in advertising and graphic design. You do not have to be gifted in art to be successful in this business. This is a skill that can be sharpened by virtually anyone who wishes to train his eye and practice good design. Stanly Community College offers an Associate of Applied Science degree curriculum that will prepare you for these very skills. Graphic design software such as the Adobe Creative Suite and others will be taught to develop the “eye for design.”
Career Outlook
The rapid growth of various forms of media has created career opportunities for qualified graphic designers. Because of the Internet explosion, graphic designers who work with web sites are now among the hottest of professionals. Using computer software, they develop the overall layout and design of magazines, newspapers, and other publications. They also may produce promotional displays and marketing brochures for products and services and design distinctive company logos for products and businesses.
The U.S. Department of Labor at www.bls.gov, tells us that “among the five design occupations, graphic designers are expected to have the most new jobs through 2014; however, job seekers are expected to face keen competition for available positions. Graphic designers with web site design and animation experience will have the best opportunities. About 3 out of 10 designers are self-employed; many do freelance work in addition to holding a salaried job in design or in another occupation.”
According to the Employment Security Commission of North Carolina at www.ncesc.com, “the estimated entry-level state wage for this field is $23,526, but the estimated average state wage is $36,972.”
