From the President

College is all about choices! First, there is the choice of going to college. Since you are looking at Stanly Community College's 2003-2004 catalog, obviously you are giving college enrollment strong consideration. Certainly in today's highly competitive and highly skilled job market, college training is absolutely essential.

Once the decision regarding enrollment is made, the remaining choices are where and what: where to attend and what to study.

As you consider the first "w" in that inquiry, the where, I hope you will give SCC strong consideration. Since its chartering in 1971, SCC has been offering hope and opportunity to folks in Stanly County and the surrounding region. The college offers single courses or entire programs of study to several thousand students yearly and has awarded over 5,000 degrees, certificates, and diplomas since that charter was first awarded.

But in selecting SCC or any college, it is not the numbers that should be your primary consideration. Quality of instruction and dedication to service are not number games! If you were a patient in the local hospital, you would not care that SCC has graduated several hundred registered nurses over the last thirty years. You are just concerned that the nurse treating you received the highest level of professional training possible.

We don't see a new student as another number to increase the 5,000 total. SCC has always looked at students as individuals and seeks to work with students one at a time to provide them the individual service and academic assistance they need. Large numbers were never our goal; a satisfied customer has always been our benchmark for success.

The final "w," or what, is another area where our college excels. SCC has a long history of offering quality and professional programs in a variety of fields including allied health, early childhood, criminal justice, business, and information technologies. Our partnerships with a number of world renowned technology leaders such as Cisco Systems speak to the quality of excellence you will find in our IT faculty and the programs they teach. Likewise, other SCC courses of study benefit from qualified, dedicated faculty.

Whatever you career decision, SCC has the caring staff and exceptional faculty who can help you make your dreams become reality.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Michael R. Taylor
President
