PLATO Learning is a powerful computer-based teaching tool designed to help students learn. PLATO has packages of basic education to advanced learning that will refresh your knowledge base after being out of school for many years. It is very easy to use, and even learners with no computer skills can function easily. Staff is always on duty to assist each learner.
ASSET and COMPASS Test preparation—All students who apply for admission to a diploma or associate degree program are required to take the ASSET and COMPASS placement yests. PLATO placement test prep offers an overview of reading, writing, and math skills to prepare you for the placement test. The Student Success Center is open to any student preparing for the placement test, and you do not have to be enrolled as a student to have access to the computers to study for the placement test. No appointment is necessary.
Tutoring services are available free of charge in the Student Success Center. In addition to the faculty and peer tutor hours, many instructors offer office hours to assist students with their studies. Office hours will be announced on the first day of class. Realizing some students need assistance other than during instructor office hours, we to to provide availability to resources throughout the week. Some of our options include:
Math Assistance We are very fortunate to have Ms. Kathy Page during the fall and spring semesters helping students with their math. She brings 30 plus years of instruction in all levels of math. Whether you need help with basic fractions (MAT 050) or someone to clarify geometry and calculus, Ms. Page can easily explain the most complicated math problem. English Assistance, Please We are especially pleased to have Mr. Dan Hazlett available for all of your English needs. He specializes in assisting students with research papers and will advise how to get started by choosing a topic, organization, finding material, and basic documentation and procedure. He is delighted to assist with citing work correctly, grammar, tone, and any other English needs you may have. Peer Tutors
Each semester we offer a number of peer tutors in many different subject areas. These students have successfully completed the courses they are tutoring and have demonstrated a very sound understanding of the course material. Let us know your needs early and we will start working on a peer tutor match for you.
Peer tutor employment is available for students interesting in helping other students learn. If you have excelled in a particular class and would like to help others succeed, ask about employment as a peer tutor. Hours are flexible and training is provided.

For our audio/visual learners we have math videos on hand. These videos supplement the course textbook. This allows the student extra exposure and practice time at a pace they can enjoy outside the classroom. The videos cover:

For Allied Health students we have an assortment of science books from which to choose: A&P, psychology books, respiratory breath sounds CDs, videos, and more. The nursing department has provided NCLEX-RN test taking software along with the Successful Problem-solving and Test Taking for Nursing book. Ms. Torso and Mr. Bones are new additions to our staff and are very eager to "show their stuff." |
Computer Access
Computer access is available to everyone. The Student Success Center offers nine new high speed computers that host PLATO Learning objectives for developmental English. Internet access for research papers, email, and other course requirements is available. Our staff will assist with WebCT and Open Mind questions.
Testing Services
Testing services are offered as a convenience for instructors and students on an as-needed basis. Students needing to make up a missed test can utilize the flexibility of the Student Success Center hours with instructor coordination and approval. Learning and Study Skills
Learning and study skills are essential foundations for your success. If you are not performing as well as you would like, stop in for access to handouts, videos, and books with information on better preparing yourself to learn. Early alert is the most important part of your bridge to success! It is easier to build a wall of knowledge one piece at a time. Don't let missed information leave holes in your foundation of learning. As soon as you recognize learning difficulty, let us know.
