Student Development—University Transfer

Stanly Community College's Associate in Arts and Associate in Science degrees are designed to help students complete the freshman and sophomore years of a four-year degree. Our university transfer program is a set of courses designed to transfer to most four-year colleges and universities in North Carolina.

Associate in ArtsThe A.A. degree is a good choice for future education, social science (history, psychology, sociology, economics, business, etc.), liberal arts (languages, English, fine arts, etc.) majors, or a professional school that requires a strong liberal arts background. The mathematics and science requirements are usually fewer than for an A.S. degree. . What classes do I need to take? AA Checklist

Associate in ScienceThe A.S. degree is is a good choice for future architecture, engineering, math, science (biology, chemistry, physics, etc.) or technical (computer science) majors. What classes do I need to take? AS checklist

General Education DiplomaStudents planning to transfer before completing an associate degree may choose to complete the 44-hour general education core requirements and receive our General Education diploma. (The general education core is a set of 44 semester hours of courses which when completed will meet the freshman/sophomore general education requirements at all UNC institutions.) A student who completes this core/diploma at a North Carolina community college will not be required to take other general education classes at a UNC institution even if his/her 44-semester credit hour core does not completely match the university's. Students should be aware that some universities have graduation requirements that transfer students must satisfy—such as physical education or a foreign language.

The University Transfer faculty and counseling staff will work closely with students to plan their transfer programs. The courses in the program are designed to transfer to most private colleges and to all colleges and universities in the North Carolina System. Students should work closely with their advisors when registering for courses and planning their futures.

Transfer Requirements

If a student has an A.A. or A.S. degree and at least a 2.0 grade point average, he or she will be considered for transfer by the senior institution. If the student meets minimum course requirements for the UNC system (MCR), he or she may transfer before completing the degree; however, completing the degree will increase transferability to the student's college of choice. Not sure if you meet MCR? Click here for more information on MCR.

Transfer Assured Admissions Policy

Students are assured admission to one of the 16 UNC institutions with the following stipulations:

Private or Independent Colleges and Universities

Interested in transferring to a private/independent college or university? Entrance requirements vary among institutions. You should contact the admissions office at the individual college and university to determine specific entrance requirements. Additional information is available on the colleges' web sites, which are accessible through this site.

Open Door Admissions Policy for the North Carolina Community College System

The colleges of the North Carolina Community College System maintain an "Open Door" admissions policy. This policy provides for the admission of any persons who are 18 or over or who have attained a high school diploma or its equivalent (GED). Admission to a college does not imply admission to all programs of study as selected programs have limited enrollment.

Applicants 18 or older who do not have a high school diploma or GED may enroll in classes leading to a high school equivalency (GED) certificate or an Adult High School diploma. For more information, visit our Literacy page.

FAQ

1. How many hours do I need to be full-time? 12 semester credit hours will qualify students as full-time status for financial aid, veterans benefits, and insurance purposes. Students pay for classes per semester credit hour up to 16 hours. Any hours above 16 are included in the 16 credit hour price.

2. Can I transfer with a 2.0 GPA? Technically, yes. Universities will accept transfer credit earned at a community college in accepted courses in which you earned a C or better. However, acceptance to many colleges/universities is very competitive. Many programs within the college/university have much stricter GPA requirements. It is in your best interest to build and maintain a healthy GPA. Grades of "C" or better in transferable courses will transfer to senior institutions.

3. How many hours can/should I take? Typically, we recommend students take 15 to 18 credit hours per semester. The guideline for course load is to anticipate spending 2 hours outside of class for every one hour in class. Therefore, for 15 credit hours, expect to spend 45 hours per week devoted to your coursework. If you are working part-time or full-time, speak with an advisor to help you determine an appropriate academic load. A maximum of 64 hours will transfer to your chosen senior institution.

4. Is it necessary to finish the general education core diploma or an AA/AS degree before transferring? It is not necessary, but it is advisable. If you do not complete at least the general education core, you will have to complete the general education requirements of the college or university to which you transfer. You should talk with an admissions representative to determine if meet the institution's admissions requirements without the completed degree.

5. When should I apply for transfer? Admissions deadlines vary from institution to institution. Contact the admissions representative at the college/university you are interested in attending two semesters before you intend to transfer.
