Basic Skills Plus Program


College & Career Readiness students have the opportunity to expand their education beyond their AHS diploma or High School Equivalency credential by participating in the Basic Skills Plus Program.

1) What is the Basic Skills Plus program?

The Basic Skills Plus program provides accelerated job training for people seeking a high school diploma or its equivalent. Its objective is to assist students in setting career and educational goals that shall enable students to complete either their high school diploma or its equivalent and job-specific training simultaneously. This program facilitates students’ entry into the job market and/or enrollment in college credit coursework more quickly.

2) What is the student cost to participate in the Basic Skills Plus program?

Student tuition and registration fees associated with BS+ program offering are waived. Such waiver is a tremendous cost-savings to College & Career Readiness students who may not have the resources to enroll in these additional offerings otherwise.

3) What are the courses available to College & Career Readiness students who want to participate in the Basic Skills Plus program?

Currently, Stanly Community College is approved to offer:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (Level 1) credential
  • Industry Core Skills – which provides a 10-hour OSHA credential
  • Energy Auditor credential

4) What are the requirements for a student to participate in the Basic Skills Plus program?

Students are required to:

  • have an eligible Test of Adult Basic Education score, which is established when the student enrolls in the College & Career Readiness program
  • maintain concurrent enrollment in the College & Career Readiness program while enrolled in the Basic Skills Plus course(s)
  • obtain the Career Readiness Certificate – silver level or higher. This certificate is a valued credential that many employers desire an individual to possess when submitting an application for employment

5) What steps should a student take to enroll in the Basic Skills Plus program?

Interested persons should contact the College & Career Readiness department (located at Stanly Community College’s West Main Center)
