The Medical Insurance and Billing Certificate program offers an excellent opportunity to gain skills necessary for entry-level positions such as an insurance and billing clerk, and medical office receptionist. Classes are conveniently offered at our Crutchfield campus during evening hours. Credits earned in the certificate program may be applied to the Medical Assisting Diploma as well as the Associate Degree program after meeting admission requirements. Applicants must submit evidence of high school diploma (or equivalent). This program does not grant credit or advanced placement for experiential learning.

*Please note, MED credits earned within the past 5 years in the certificate program may be applied to the Medical Assisting Diploma as well as the Associate Degree program after meeting admission requirements. Students requesting credit for MED courses taken within the past 5 years must have earned a 78 or above in the course as well as complete competencies with the Medical Assisting Program Director with 100% accuracy prior to being admitted in the Medical Assisting Diploma Program. This requirement also applies to any transfer students wanting to be admitted in the Medical Assisting Diploma Program.

Completion of the Medical Assisting Certificate program does not qualify the graduate for certification as a Medical Assistant by the AAMA. Nor will he/she be able to take the National Certification Exam administered by AAMA, MAERB or CAAHEP.

CERTIFICATE ADMISSION PROCEDURES

  1. Submit to the Admissions Office at Stanly Community College a properly completed Application for Admission.
  2. Submit to the SCC Admissions Office an official copy of a high school transcript showing successful completion of all requirements for graduation. A GED certificate indicating a passing score or an Adult High School diploma is acceptable in lieu of a regular high school diploma.
  3. Complete the placement test (ACCUPLACER) must be completed prior to enrollment in the Medical Assisting Certificate Program. Placement test scores older than five years are not accepted.

Upon successful completion of the Medical Billing and Coding certificate, the graduate will be prepared to sit for the Certified Professional Coders-Hospital Exam (CPC-H)/Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC) administered through the American Association of Certified Professional Coders (AAPC).

The AAPC recommends that certification candidates hold an associate’s degree; however, diploma holders are also eligible. While full CPC certification requires two years of relevant work experience, the AAPC will grant apprentice status (CPC-A) to individuals who pass the exam but do not yet have the necessary work experience. CPC-A holders may apply to have the apprentice designation removed by either submitting two letters of recommendation confirming two years of professional experience, or submitting proof of 80 hours of coding education plus one letter verifying one year of on-the-job experience.

To maintain CPC certification, medical billing and coding professional must be current AAPC members. This requires annual renewal of AAPC memberships and completion of 36 continuing education units every two years.

Upon successful completion of the Medical Billing and Coding Certificate, the graduate should be able to:

  • Use medical terminology effectively
  • Utilize various reference materials in a variety of situations
  • Code in a hospital, clinic, medical clinic, long-term and home health care facility. Employment may also be found in consulting firms, coding and billing services, insurance companies and governmental agencies.
