Are you confounded with the need to have so many different passwords just to log on to your work computer or to check your e-mail? Do you ever need the share drive but can't find it on your computer? This month's tip will show you the difference between three areas of your computer work environment and how to troubleshoot the log in of different components.

As a general overview, your computer work environment consists of the following three pieces, each of which requires a password and login:

  1. The Windows operating system on your computer
  2. The Novell network where you access the share drive and your personal storage space
  3. Our Groupwise e-mail system

Depending on how you log into your computer, you may log in to one, two or all three of these components at the same time. Let's take a look the different options you have:

Workstation only? When you first start your computer you log in using the Novell log-in screen. The catch is that if "Workstation Only" is checked on that screen you are ONLY logging into Windows and will NOT be able to access any of the network drives such as share or your personal storage space.

When you UNcheck the workstation only option, you will be logged into BOTH Windows and the network so that those network drives will be available to you. Because of the way this process works, your Windows and network passwords should be the same. (See figure 1)

Where is my share? If you logged into Workstation only, you did not connect to the network, so you do not have access to its resources. Here's how to connect to the network AFTER you have logged into Workstation only (illustrated in figure 2):

  1. Locate the Netware Services red N icon in the system tray on the lower right part of your screen (next to the time). If the red N is not initially visible, expand your system tray
  2. Right click on the red N (this will display its shortcut menu)
  3. Choose Netware Login from the shortcut menu (this will display an abbreviated Novell Login with your user name already completed)
  4. Type your password (this should be the same password you used to log into Workstation only).
  5. Click OK (the will log you into the network and maintain your Windows login)

Groupwise password? You have a separate password for logging in to the e-mail system. This password is usually DIFFERENT from your network password. Depending on the way your computer has been configured you may be asked to log in to Groupwise after you log into the network. (See figure 3). Do NOT check the "Use single sign on" box when you enter your Groupwise password. Your Groupwise password is also the one required when you use the link to Groupwise from the SCC homepage (this is known as the "web client").
