SCC Hosts 21st Century Scholars Luncheon

(May 5, 2008) Stanly Community College (SCC) hosted the annual 21st Century Scholars luncheon on Monday, April 28, 2008, at the Albemarle campus.  The 21st Century Scholars program was initiated by Dr. Davis Fort, and was designed to provide educational opportunities for deserving students who exhibit initiative and potential, but are financially unable to pursue post secondary education.

These students are identified by school counselors in their freshman year to receive full tuition scholarships to Stanly Community College upon their graduation from high school.

Dr. Fort moved to Albemarle in 1966 and maintained a practice in Stanly County for over 30 years.  He was a member of the Stanly County Board of Commissioners during the chartering of Stanly Community College, serving as Chairman his last four years.  He is a current member of the SCC Board of Trustees and the Foundation.

“SCC is very fortunate to have the leadership of Dr. Fort.  He is a tremendous asset to SCC and the 21st Century Scholars Program,” remarked SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor.  “Through the 21st Century Scholars Program, we are able to offer an opportunity for college that might not have previously existed, and encourage these students to graduate from high school,” Dr. Taylor added.
