Hundreds Ascend to SCC for the First Commencement on Campus!

(May 12, 2008) Stanly Community College (SCC) held its first ever on-campus graduation Saturday morning.  Over 1300 parents, family and friends of some 230 graduates watched as degrees, diplomas and certificates were awarded to the class of 2008 by college trustee chairman, Elbert L. "Whit" Whitley.

SCC, which has held graduations since 1974, has never held a graduation on campus prior to Saturday.  But, this May the annual event was held on the SCC campus under a large tent, located in the parking lot between the Eddins, Whitley and Snyder Buildings.

"This was a great day in the history of Stanly Community College.  Graduations should be held on campus and this year we were able to accomplish that," SCC president Dr. Michael Taylor comments after presiding for the 12th year at college commencement exercises.

Dr. Taylor expressed his appreciation to the many people who were involved in helping to make the on-campus graduation possible.  "Our maintenance staff has been working hard for weeks to get our campus to look so beautiful.  It has never looked so good and they deserve a lot of thanks," he added.
The SCC President also thanked a number of public agencies that helped support the graduation effort including:  the Albemarle Police Department, Stanly County Sheriff's Department, and the Stanly County EMS.

Dr. Taylor concluded by noting that a new tradition at the college had begun. "This was such a great experience for our graduates and their families, this is where we will hold all future gradations," Dr. Taylor predicted.
