Get Your Game On at SCC

(August 13, 2007) Stanly Community College held its first gaming tournament on July 28, 2007, in conjunction with the Simulation and Game Development (SGD) program.  Dozens of local participants enjoyed team competition with Halo 2, Gears of War, and Guitar Hero 2.  Gaming participants, friends, and family members enjoyed refreshments and a fun-filled afternoon.  Prizes were awarded to the top three contestants.

“The gaming tournament was a tremendous success,” remarked Scott Barlowe, program head for the Simulation and Game Development program.  “This was our first tournament.  We wanted to get folks interested in the Simulation and Game Development degree at SCC.  Of course, this is just part of the potential that the SGD degree entails.  The Simulation and Gaming industry is growing fast and it offers many career opportunities.”

“We would like to thank Gamestop from Albemarle who helped with the equipment, the SCC Student Development who helped with refreshments and t-shirts, and a special thanks to our Technology Department who helped organize the event,” added Barlowe.

The Simulation and Game Development degree was initiated at SCC in the fall of 2006. Students learn to design and program games, develop 3D animation, and apply artificial intelligence techniques to games by using the latest technology and software tools.   The SGD degree prepares students for employment in various fields such as healthcare, engineering, forensics, animation, and much more.
