(December 18, 2007) Tanya Davis, Vice President of Stanly Community College’s (SCC) Crutchfield Campus, has been named the new Vice President of Economic and Workforce Development, SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor told the trustees at the December meeting. The Davis appointment is effective February 1, 2008. Ms. Davis will assume her new role with the retirement of Lonnie Swanner, who has served in that capacity at SCC since December 1978.
“Tanya has demonstrated her leadership abilities through the growth and development of the Crutchfield Campus and I am sure will continue that exceptional record in her new role as Vice President of Economic and Workforce development,” Dr. Taylor told the trustees.
Dr. Taylor also noted that Tanya’s record of service at the college and her own educational aspirations are indicative of what community colleges are all about. “We are all about giving people opportunities and allowing them to go as far as they can and that is Tanya’s story. She started at the college as a secretary without an associate degree. Today she is assuming leadership of a major division of the college and is working on her doctorate. Every step of the way in her career at SCC she has accepted the challenge to do more and has succeeded at everything she has ever tried,” Dr. Taylor explained.
Ms. Davis has an associate degree from SCC, a bachelor’s degree from UNC—Greensboro, a master's from Western Carolina University, and is working on a doctorate from there as well.
Ms. Davis told the trustees, “I look forward to forging partnerships and working with agencies and industries in the county to strengthen the economy and quality of life for our citizens.”
Ms. Davis joined the staff at Stanly Technical College in 1983, working as a data technician in the continuing education division. She then served as Administrative Assistant to the Vice President of Instruction before returning to continuing education as an occupational coordinator. In 2002 she assumed the position of Vice President of the Crutchfield Campus.
The Division she will lead includes the SCC’s job training programs and special interest courses for adults. Several unique college programs on that list include only one of two community college auctioneering programs in the state and a highly regarded automotive restoration program. Under the new college alignment, the Crutchfield Campus will move into the economic and workforce development division so Ms. Davis will continue to provide overall leadership for the college campus in Locust.
