(December 3, 2007) Cammie Burleigh of Stanly Community College is a recipient of the second annual North Carolina Campus Compact Community Impact Student Award. This award is presented each year to students who have made significant, innovative contributions to campus-based efforts to address community needs. Burleigh is one of 26 college students from across North Carolina to be recognized for their outstanding achievements.
Burleigh is returning to school as a student in the Respiratory Therapy program after spending a few years as a stay-at-home mom. While balancing her roles as mother, wife, and full-time student, Burleigh actively volunteers in the community through Stanly’s service-learning program. She provides multiple services to others through various agencies: recruiting volunteers to participate in cancer research studies for the American Cancer Society, promoting the annual Great American Smokeout, and volunteering with the Pregnancy Resource Center to educate new moms on childhood issues such as asthma and allergies.
Burleigh was announced as a Community Impact Student Awardee on November 10, 2007, during the annual North Carolina Campus Compact Student Conference held at East Carolina University. CEO for the Corporation for National and Community Service, David Eisner, and North Carolina Campus Compact Executive Director Lisa Keyne presented the awards before an audience of more than 350 college students representing 29 schools and two states.
North Carolina Campus Compact is a growing statewide coalition of higher education presidents and chancellors in North Carolina established to encourage and support campus engagement in the community.
