SCC Softball Dream Becomes Reality

(January 29, 2008) This past Sunday the dream of collegiate athletics became reality as Stanly Community College held its first softball scrimmage against Southeastern Community College.

There were two 5-inning games played at the Endy Optimist Softball field with the host Eagles pulling out victories in both games 5-3 and 4-3.  The Eagles started off strong as Chelsea Morton hit a lead-off home run in the first inning and SCC never looked back, scoring two runs in the first inning and three in the fourth.

In the second game, the Eagles fell behind early 0-3, but rallied behind the bat of Keri Hinson in the third to take the lead and the game.  Chelsea Morton was strong on the mound in both games racking up 13 strike-outs for the day.  Lady Eagle's Coach Ben Rogers was thrilled with the way his team played.  “We have had limited practice due to the extreme weather over the past two weeks, but I was really proud of the way the girls hung in there and chalked up the victories,” Rogers said.  “This season will be very challenging; however, I feel that as this team continues to grow we will surprise some of these teams out there.  We just need to keep working hard on the fundamentals in practice,” added Rogers.
