(July 12, 2007) Stanly Community College’s Phi Beta Lambda chapter was named one of the country’s top local chapters at the business student organization’s annual leadership conference June 22-27 in Chicago.
Meeting at the Hyatt Regency Conference Center, the conference began with the announcement of the National “Gold Seal Chapter” recipients. SCC Chapter President Crystal Dennis accepted the award, with chapter delegates receiving gold ribbons for their nametags.
At the closing Awards Program, the SCC Parliamentary Procedure team received seventh place. It was the fourth consecutive year for the local chapter to reach the ten finalists in the competition. Team members Crystal Dennis, Travis McKenzie, Dawn Eason, Donna Gosney, and Eric Scott did a written test on parliamentary procedure and then a performance of a sample business meeting. Judges for the event were members of the National Association of Parliamentarians. Only two of the “top ten” teams were from community colleges.
In other competitions, the Campbell University team received first place in the Business Plan event and the Asheville-Buncombe Community College chapter first place in the Partnership with Business Project event.
The North Carolina Annual Business Report prepared by State President Clarence Goode from SCC received sixth place.
Dr. Robert Simmons, who retired from Lenoir-Rhyne College this spring, was recognized on stage for 42 years of service as a local adviser, the nation’s highest.
Delegates elected Ashley Keymer from the University of Southern Arkansas as national president and Rachel Loescher from Western Carolina University as vice president.
Ms. Dennis served as one of three conference interns and worked with the national staff members throughout the meeting.
Also representing SCC were Thomas Milano, Brynn Poplin, Bryan DeCastro, and Adviser Dan Hazlett, who led a workshop for state advisers on connecting students and business leaders.
The North Carolina delegation included 148 representatives from 20 chapters, including Pfeiffer University.
Delegates also attended leadership workshops and participated in general sessions highlighted by motivational keynote speakers.
Phi Beta Lambda is the collegiate level of the secondary organization Future Business Leaders of America. Following the PBL conference, over seven thousand high school students, including representatives from West Stanly High School, were in Chicago for the national FBLA conference.
Since the Stanly Community College chapter was chartered in 1975, delegates have attended 31 national conferences. Phi Beta Lambda emphasizes leadership in business, and membership is open to any student in curriculums and majors that involve developing business skills. Chapter advisers at SCC are Mr. Hazlett, Tammi McIlwaine, and Merlin Amirtharaj.
“Attending the conference was an exciting and beneficial experience,” Ms. Dennis commented, “and we appreciate the support of the many SCC faculty and staff who assisted us as we prepared for Chicago and this tremendous learning opportunity. We were proud to represent the college and the community.”
