SCC Students Beautify Campus

(July 17, 2007)   Stanly Community College’s Early Childhood program prepares teachers to be inventive and to create developmentally appropriate environments for children, inside as well as outside.  Mrs. Hopkins’ EDU 151—Creative Activities course took the opportunity to add additional beauty to the Albemarle campus by placing a birdbath and a variety of flowers and butterfly bushes around the Eddins building.  If this natural environment were at a child care center or elementary school, children could observe various birds, insects, and wildlife as they visited the habitat.  By providing hands-on experiences, students leave the program ready to face the challenges of today’s educational market.

“This is a great way for our students to learn about natural environments and its importance in early childhood development.  In today’s world, natural habitat is quickly being diminished and children are not exposed to the aesthetic beauty of our world.  In large cities, children only experience the outdoors when visiting a nearby park.  Here in Stanly County we are lucky to have many places to experience nature’s beauty,” commented Christy Hopkins, Early Childhood Department Instructor/Advisor.
