Go for the Gold with Workkeys and the Career Readiness Certificate

(November 30, 2007) Debra Chavis is a great example of how the Career Readiness Certificate can help anyone win the career change marathon.  Debra worked for more than twenty years as a nurse before changes in her life called for a change in career direction.  A search for the specifics of that direction led her into the Career Start Program, a joint program operated by Stanly Community College in cooperation with the Employment Security Commission and the Department of Health and Human Services.

While exploring career choices in the Career Start Program, Debra learned about the Career Readiness Certificate from Cathy Thurston, who directs Career Start.  “It was a natural for me. It really makes you think, and the things you learn are really important skills.  It may not all be easy, but it's certainly worth every minute of it,” remarked Debra.

Debra goes on to explain that “Even though it covers the subjects you like as well as the ones you don’t, it is a great source of encouragement.  You really find out what you can do!  It's a great confidence builder.”

Debra achieved the highest level of certification in the Career Readiness Certificate Program:  the Gold Certificate. She was given the Gold Certificate, signed by Governor Mike Easley, a CRC Gold Winner T‑Shirt, and a special gift given to the first ten Gold Certificate achievers:  a golden pen inscribed with her achievement level.

Debra also pointed out that the Career Readiness program offers great potential growth for the future job market in Stanly County and the region.

Debra has just completed an associate degree at Stanly Community College and is beginning a course of study at Gaston Community College in Biotechnology.  She is looking forward to a new career in the newest and fastest growing segment of North Carolina industry.

Debra Chavis is a Stanly County native and a lifelong resident.  She graduated from West Stanly High School.
