August 21, 2007 Stanly Community College (SCC) is pleased to announce the new Athletic Director, Robert Stack. Robert has been employed with SCC for the past six years as a history instructor. Robert grew up in upstate New York where he earned his bachelor of arts degree in Criminal Justice from the University at Albany. He earned his master's degree in history from Winthrop University. “I’m honored and privileged to accept this wonderful opportunity and look forward to teaching our athletes the value of competition, the importance of discipline, and the meaning of teamwork,” commented Stack. “We are gearing up for a very busy season and want to encourage any student with an interest in sports to give us a call. We are putting teams together now and we need dedicated players,” added Stack.
The 2007-2008 school year will be a very exciting one at SCC as students, faculty, and staff prepare for participation in intercollegiate athletics. SCC embarked on this endeavor in 2006 with a club team in women’s volleyball. This year SCC will participate in Region X of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in volleyball, baseball, and softball. The women’s volleyball season will take place in the fall of 2007 competing at the Division III level in a ten-game schedule. In the spring of 2008 the baseball team will begin play at the Division II level with an 18-game schedule, and the softball team will compete at the Division I level with a 32-game schedule.
SCC President Dr. Michael Taylor added, “This presents a great opportunity for student athletes who want to continue their athletic career, while getting a quality and affordable education. SCC offers its students a multitude of extracurricular activities, and adding athletics will just expand those choices that students have.”
The SCC mascot will be the Eagle and we will use royal blue and white as our primary colors. Anyone interested in participating as a student athlete or as a coach should contact Robert Stack at rstack7670@stanly.edu or (704) 991-0343. Financial aid and academic scholarships are available.
