pattersonThe Patterson Building

The Patterson Buildling was built in 1975 and later named in memory of State Senator Frank N. Patterson who, along with House Representative Lane Brown III, guided legislation through the NC General Assembly that created Stanly Technical Institute in July 1971.

The building currently houses the following: Business Office, Counseling, Dennis Community Room, Financial Aid, Eagle's 1-Stop Center and Academic Support Center, and the President’s Office.

webbcenterThe Webb Student Center

The Webb Student Center was built in 1975 and named in honor of Dr. H.T. "Toby" Webb, a long-time college trustee. In 2005, an addition was built for a new bookstore.
The center now houses the student activities center, the SGA office, and the food services division.

brydFounding President of Stanly Community College

Dr. Charles H. Byrd was President from 1971 until 1989.
During his tenure, SCC offered 24 technical, six vocational, two certificates, and one general education program; the SCC Foundation was established, and the college began its first full-time evening program.

February 23, 1973 - Student Government Association organized; Steve Harkey, New London Industrial Management student, elected as first SGA president.

1974 - First graduation ceremony with 17 Associate degree and 38 vocational diploma students; earlier five students who started when SCC was part of Anson Community College received degrees from SCC.

November 15, 1974 - SCC's Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter was chartered. Lydia Almond Morris won the 1975 state competition in Typing and traveled to Miami Beach, Florida, as SCC's first student to participate at the national level.

June 10, 1977 - Artist rendering of Patterson Building for the campus Open House announcement was first color picture to appear in Stanly News and Press.

June 25, 1979 - Name changed from "Institute" to Stanly Technical College.
