Children’s Art Show Held for Week of the Young Child

In celebration of "Week of the Young Child," the Early Childhood Education (ECE) Department of Stanly Community College (SCC), Stanly County Partnership for Children Smart Start, and Cabarrus Rowan Stanly Association for the Education of Young Children (CRSaeyc) sponsored a Children's Art Show April 24 - April 28, 2017. The art show was held at the Stanly County Commons in Albemarle, NC.

Artwork of local children ages preschool through eight from local schools and child care centers, pre-k classrooms, and homeschoolers were on display. Parents were invited to a reception on Tuesday, April 25, to see their children's masterpieces.

"Week of the Young Child" is also a time to reflect on the importance of the role of early educators in our society and is a great opportunity for parents to tell their child's early educator "thank you" for the valuable role they play in their child's life.

In Stanly County, there are 27 licensed childcare centers and 11 licensed family childcare homes. These 38 locally owned and operated small businesses contribute to the success and future growth of Stanly County. They provide approximately 307 jobs while taking care of approximately 1,332 children aged birth to five and over 300 before/after school aged children. "This means that the parents or guardians of these children can go to work each day! Licensed child care is an important link in the economy of Stanly County," commented ECE Program Head Christie Honeycutt.

Research tells us that the educational level of the teacher is among the greatest determining factors in how much a young child learns. "We are proud that many of the early educators in Stanly County - administrators and teachers - in the licensed centers and homes are graduates or current students in the Early Childhood Department at the College," remarked Mrs. Honeycutt.

In addition to an Associate Degree, SCC offers a diploma in Early Childhood Education as well as certificates in Infant/Toddler Care, Social/Emotional Development, School Age, and Administration.
