Cosmetology Students Complete Training (07/21/2015)

Students in the Cosmetology program at Stanly Community College (SCC) recently completed their training and 1,500 contact hours. They are now able to take the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination, and upon successfully passing will become a licensed cosmetologist in the state of North Carolina. Once licensed, students will be able to pursue employment opportunities in beauty salons and other related businesses.

The job outlook is very positive for the beauty industry. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and the N.C. Employment Security Commission, employment of hairdressers and cosmetologists is projected to grow 13 percent from 2012 to 2022, about as fast as the average for all occupations. Most job openings will result from the need to replace workers who leave the occupation.

Cosmetology coursework includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multicultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics.

High school students can also enroll in Cosmetology classes through the Career and College Promise pathway. They learn all the same concepts and offer a variety of services to the public at very reasonable prices. All work is performed by students under the supervision of instructors. These services are available at the Cosmetology department located in the Burleson Square Shopping Center and at West Stanly High School. For appointments at West Stanly call (704) 485-2793, and for Burleson Square, call (704) 982-3304.

Fall Cosmetology and evening Manicurist Technician classes start August 17. For more information about the SCC Cosmetology programs, call Gena Trogdon at (704) 991-0374. For more information on Manicurist Technician classes, call Kimberly Herrin at (704) 991-0339.
