New Human Services/Substance Abuse Concentration Degree

Stanly Community College (SCC) is pleased to announce a new Associate in Applied Science Degree in Human Services Technology/Substance Abuse Concentration, beginning spring 2019.

Coursework includes classroom and experiential activities oriented toward an overview of chemical dependency, psychological/sociological process, the twelve Core Functions, intervention techniques with individuals in groups, and follow-up activities with recovering clients.

Graduates should qualify for positions as substance abuse counselors, DUI counselors, halfway house workers, residential facility employees, and substance education specialists. With educational and clinical experiences, graduates can obtain certification by the North Carolina Substance Abuse Board.

According to research at EMSI Labor Market Analytics (www.economicmodeling.com), the median hourly earnings for a substance abuse counselor is $18.62 per hour, and 4,625 jobs are currently available in our region. Additionally, by the year 2023, substance abuse counseling positions will increase to 5,217.
