Students from the Associate Degree Nursing program at Stanly Community College (SCC) recently held their annual pinning ceremony at Providence Church of God in Locust, NC. The Nursing program is named in honor of Mrs. Annie Ruth Kelley, a member of the Charter Board at SCC and the Board’s first chairperson.
Pastor Jerry Ingle gave the invocation and Nursing graduate Lacey Thompson introduced the honored guests. SCC President Dr. Brenda Kays welcomed guests and congratulated the students for their accomplishments in a challenging yet rewarding program of study. Director of Nursing Chassity Washburn introduced the Class of 2015.
This class of students put together a “thank you” slide presentation while Mary Efird and Sarah Smith performed a song in appreciation for all those who supported and encouraged them along their educational journeys.
Members of the Nursing class were recognized for their outstanding achievements from Nursing Instructors Jan Almond and Angela Hamby. The Heart Award was presented to Renee Morton, which is given to a student who has completed the program successfully, all while surviving challenges. Lacey Thompson received the Dr. George Eddins Award, which is given for clinical excellence within the Nursing program.
Family and friends watched as 34 graduates received a nurse’s pin from Instructors Blair Whitley and Amber Hatley. The pinning ceremony symbolizes completion of the highly respected and rigorous Nursing program at SCC. The graduates will become licensed nurses after passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) later in the spring.
Nursing Instructor Wanda Huneycutt read the Nightingale pledge as the class lit candles and recited the pledge in memory of Florence Nightingale. This pledge is a statement of principles indicating the nurses’ commitment to professionalism and patient care. Pastor Ingle conducted the “blessing of the hands” and gave the closing prayer.
