Students from the Associate Degree Nursing program at Stanly Community College (SCC) recently held their annual pinning ceremony at Providence Church of God in Locust, NC. The Nursing program is named in honor of Mrs. Annie Ruth Kelley, the first chairperson of the College Board of Trustees and the first woman to chair a community college board in North Carolina. Mrs. Kelley served with distinction for 28 years as a college trustee and passed away just last summer.
Pastor Chad Horn gave the invocation and the closing prayer. SCC President Dr. John Enamait welcomed guests and congratulated the students for their accomplishments in this “rewarding yet challenging” field of study.
Director of Nursing Chassity Washburn introduced the Class of 2017 and commented, “This pinning ceremony symbolizes completion of the highly respected and rigorous Nursing program at SCC.” The graduates will become licensed nurses after passing the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEXRN) later in the spring. Twenty-nine students from the general cohort received their nurse pins while twelve students completed the LPN to RN cohort to receive their pins.
The guest speaker was Ms. Deann Welke, a Certified Critical Care nurse at Carolinas Healthcare System – Northeast who works in the ICU department. Ms. Welke also serves as a Clinical Ladder III nurse and a clinical adjunct faculty member for the College.
Select members of the Nursing class were recognized for their outstanding achievements. The Heart Award, which is given to students who have completed the program despite challenging situations, was presented to Erika Austin and Shani Davis. DJ Denton and Amanda Whitley received the Dr. George Eddins Award, which is given for clinical excellence within the Nursing program.
As the ceremony ended, Pastor Horn performed the “blessing of the hands,” a spiritual experience symbolically linking the art of hands-on nursing care with the science of nursing practice. The Nursing Class of 2017 lit candles and recited the Nightingale pledge – a statement of principles about the nurses’ commitment to professionalism and patient care.
