SCC Delegates Participate in State, National PBL Fall Leadership Conferences

Representatives of the Stanly Community College (SCC) Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) chapter participated in the business student group’s Fall Leadership Development Conference in Greensboro recently.

State Officers Katrina Sams (SCC) and Chase Clontz (Pfeiffer University) were among the six state officers who presided over the weekend meeting. The program included a series of workshops, general sessions, and idea-exchange sessions.

Special guests at the conference were PBL National Secretary Travis London from Kentucky and the first state PBL president, Bobbie Avant Brown. Ms. Brown spoke about her experiences as the 1954 president while she was a student at East Carolina University and then presented the NCPBL “Gold Star Chapter” awards. SCC was one of the 14 chapters receiving the award for completing a list of fall semester goals.

Membership awards went to Central Carolina Community College and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill chapters, both with over 100 members.

In a competition of chapter displays, Stanly received Second Place. “Connect with PBL and Jump Start Your Future” was the display theme. In addition to photos, recruitment brochures, a PowerPoint show, and copies of news articles, a 3-D printed car battery and pair of jumper cables was featured.

SCC delegates included Dony Santos, Courtney Earnhardt, Samantha Vang, Chuck VanHoose, Jessica Ferretiiz, Katrina Sams, and Adviser Dan Hazlett.

Following the state fall conference, delegates also attended a national fall leadership conference in Charleston, South Carolina. In addition to workshop sessions, the program included a general session with keynote speaker Alex Sheen, founder of “because I said I would,” an international social media movement and nonprofit organization working in 150 countries.

At that conference, North Carolina Phi Beta Lambda was recognized for having the largest state membership in the country for the fall semester and the largest state delegation both for the secondary Future Business Leaders of America and the college Phi Beta Lambda levels.
