B.R.S., Inc., a utility construction company, located in Richfield, NC, recently collaborated with Stanly Community College (SCC) for employee training. "We have used SCC's Welding Program in the past to help us with our North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Welding Certifications," explained Wes Sells, Safety Coordinator at B.R.S., Inc. "We have had a great deal of success when we send our welders to classes where they can focus just on their welding skills. Our employees could already weld, but passing the test can be a different challenge. I was seeking a program to help our welders and that is when SCC developed a program specifically for our employees."
SCC Welding Instructors William Beaver and Danny Fox were able to customize an eight-week welding program to help B.R.S. employees gain the knowledge needed to successfully take the NCDOT Field Welder Certification exam, an exam developed from applicable sections of the NCDOT Standard Specifications for Roads and Bridges. "We were thrilled to partner with B.R.S. on their employee training," said William Beaver, SCC Welding Program Head. "Welders are in high demand and needed in almost every industry. SCC is prepared to train future welders with the latest technologies, including the newest welding simulator on the market. Additionally, we offer internships and apprenticeship programs."
Mr. Sells noted, "All four of our employees successfully passed the NCDOT Field Welder Certification exam, and we will be using SCC in the future for welding classes. Our employees had good comments to say about the program. These employees were working 10 hours on the job and then leaving the job to attend classes at the College from 6:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. They were dedicated to the classes and spent personal time to be able to become Certified Welders."
According to EMSI data, nearly 2,900 welding jobs will be available in our region by the year 2020. SCC offers a welding diploma, two certificates, and a high-school pathway for juniors and seniors. Financial aid is available for those who qualify. For more information about SCC's Welding program, contact William Beaver, Program Head, at (704) 991-0383 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
