The Stanly Community College (SCC) Student Government Association (SGA) celebrated the end of the 2018-19 year with an after-hours lunch at the Goody Shop Cafe, owned by former SGA president Hugh Wainwright.

Opened in 1919, this is the 100th Anniversary of the Goody Shop Cafe.

Current SGA President Brittany Brooks presented a framed certificate of congratulations to Mr. Wainwright, who served as SCC SGA president in 1988-89, and later that year graduated from Stanly Community College with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Accounting.

“The year has been a very busy and productive one for our SGA, comprised of elected officers and representatives from the College’s student organizations,” Ms. Brooks commented. “We thought it would be enjoyable to go off campus for this last meeting, and when we heard about the Goody Shop’s anniversary, we thought it would add to the occasion to be a part of Mr. Wainwright’s business celebration.”

When accepting the recognition, Mr. Wainwright spoke about both working hard to make a career successful as well as the value of an education. “With my accounting degree, I am able to do the financial end of the business myself. That adds to my workload but saves me a lot of money! It was also good to meet the current SGA members and realize I am remembered as a part of the College’s history.”

Also attending from the SCC faculty and staff were: Josh Boyer, Student Life Director; Marcus Pryor, Associate Dean of Students and Career Placement; Jessica Smith, Foundation Operations and Grants Coordinator; Rita Love, Bible Campus Ministry Advisor; Melissa Jackson, Medical Laboratory Technology Advisor; Kelly Deal, Human Services Club Advisor; Gary Hatley, Electronics Club Advisor; and Dan Hazlett, Student Government Association and Phi Beta Lambda Advisor.
