The Stanly Community College (SCC) student body has elected officers to serve as the 2019-2020 leaders for the campus Student Government Association (SGA). SGA is the voice for the students on college decisions and the umbrella group for the various student organizations. SGA officers and senators from the student organizations meet once a month for discussions and reports.
Serving as president is Giselle Chavez, Albemarle, a Business Administration graduate and current Advertising and Graphic Arts student. As SGA president, she will represent the student body on the College’s Board of Trustees.
Giselle Chavez served as president of the Stanly Early College Student Council. She was a member of the SCC Phi Beta Lambda (PBL) Parliamentary Procedure team that placed Sixth in national competition last year; she also served as state PBL vice president. Vice President is Jailia Vang, Albemarle, who is pursuing an Associate in Science degree and plans to transfer to UNC-Charlotte.
Allison Taylor Smith, Albemarle, was elected as Secretary. She is an Associate in Science major planning to transfer to Pfeiffer University to complete a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting. Filling the position of Treasurer is Taylor Furr, Concord. She is working toward an Associate in Science degree and plans to transfer to UNC-Charlotte to become a Nurse Practitioner. Serving as Public Information Officer is Haleigh Griffin, Peachland. Ms. Griffin is pursuing an Associate in Arts degree, with plans to transfer to Wingate University to major in Psychology.
The SGA, with assistance from a number of the other student organizations, has sponsored two service activities during November and December. A coat drive was done on both the Albemarle and Locust campuses. In connection with a college transfer fair and Christmas party, SGA collected 250 pairs of new children’s socks to contribute to community agencies.
In November, Giselle Chavez and Phi Beta Lambda Senator Monica Chang, along with SGA Advisor Dan Hazlett, attended the state SGA fall conference at Forsyth Technical Community College.
“We are pleased to have these five outstanding students serving as our SGA officers for this year,” commented SCC President Dr. John Enamait. “They are exemplary student leaders and will be advocates for our students and good representatives of SCC at state functions.”
