Stanly Community College's (SCC) Fire and Rescue program recently sponsored specialized training for the Department of Defense (DoD) that included Technical Rescue Trench Block, Technical Rescue Structural Collapse, and Traffic Incident Management certification training.
The North Carolina Office of the State Fire Marshall (OSFM) and the DoD approved the compression of the courses into a compressed two-week series that included classroom, practical training and testing, and written testing. In the first series of classes, students earned a 100% passing rate.
The 25 students enrolled in the training were from various military branches across the US but were stationed at the Air National Guard Base in New London, NC, during their two-week training. Students learned how to stabilize collapsed structural situations, secure air-operated strut systems, construct tripod systems, cut metal, and conduct mock rescues, as well as a host of other exercise scenarios during their training.
Lewis Edwards, Program Head of Fire and Rescue Training for Stanly Community College, explained, "This specialized training gives students hands-on experiences with all of the tools and scenarios that they need to do their jobs. Students completing the program not only received DoD certification but also earned an NC OSFM certification. SCC will offer this type of training throughout the year and we anticipate adding other specialty programs in the future."
A number of instructors were involved in the training. The DoD instructors included Jaret Kinnaird, Brandon Pelkey, Rusty Starnes, and other specialists from the DoD. The SCC instructors were Scott McCaskill (Lead instructor and from RescueTec USA), Chip Osborne, and Tommy McNeil, all OSFM qualified instructors for these specialties.
