SCC Students Win SkillsUSA Awards in Cosmetology

Stanly Community College (SCC) Cosmetology students were able to participate in the SkillsUSA North Carolina Leadership and Skills Conference held in Greensboro, North Carolina on April 1, 2019, for the Cosmetology Competitions. SkillsUSA is a partnership between students, teachers, and industry representatives to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA, formerly known as VICA (the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America) is a national organization serving teachers and high school/college students who are preparing for careers in technical, skilled and service occupations.
Congratulations to the Cosmetology students who earned four medals during the recent Cosmetology Competitions. Award winners include Abigail Helms who won first place in the Cosmetology Competition. Ms. Helms will advance to the SkillsUSA National Competitions to be held later this summer in Louisville, Kentucky. Amber Ivester placed third in the Cosmetology Competition and fifth in the Skills Project Showcase. Haley Efird placed fourth in the Esthetics Competition. Other Cosmetology students that participated in the competitions include Keuna Drake (Mt. Gilead), Wyshea Leake (Mt. Gilead), Brianna Harris (Oakboro), Bethanie Hagler (Norwood), Amber Godwin (Wingate), Jenna Shelley (Indian Trail), Ashawna Young (Albemarle), Mianna Deberry (Monroe), and Memory Allen (Monroe).
“We are extremely proud of our students and all those who participated,” noted David Smith, SCC Cosmetology Program Head. “The SkillsUSA competition teaches our students leadership, teamwork and self-confidence. More importantly, our students are able to showcase their talent and abilities while gaining valuable career-ready skills.”
