During fall convocation, Stanly Community College (SCC) named the 2019 Faculty and Adjunct Faculty of the Year recipients, Kara Finch and Janet Ross, respectively. Decisive factors for eligibility include dedication and skill for their profession, outstanding leadership qualities, and excellent performance and commitment to the community college mission.
Kara Finch, Human Services Technology Program Head, received the Faculty of the Year award. Kara is currently working towards a doctorate degree at Wingate University. She earned her Master’s Degree in Gerontology from the University of North Carolina—Charlotte (UNCC). She earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Human Services from Gardner Webb University. Kara is an alumna of Stanly Community College; she earned her Associate in Applied Science Degree in Human Services Technology in 2003. Kara serves as Board President for the North Carolina Organization for Human Services, in addition, serves on the Local Interagency Children’s Council. Kara holds credentials for Human Services Board Certified Practitioner (HSBCP), Certified Crisis Prevention Institute Instructor, and Certified QPR (Suicide Prevention) Program Instructor. Kara, and husband Creig, have four beautiful children, ages 12, 6, 4, and 2. Kara stated, “I am very passionate about the field of human services, specifically foster care and adoption advocacy, suicide prevention, domestic violence awareness, and older adult rights. I feel blessed to be a part of SCC. Being able to teach, support, and encourage our future human service professionals is a true honor.”
Kara is eligible for state level nomination for the Excellence in Teaching Award. Only one award will be given among the 58 community colleges in the North Carolina system. This award is given to celebrate, identify, and reward outstanding work and commitment to the community college mission.
Janet Ross, English Instructor, received the Adjunct Faculty of the Year award. Janet earned her Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree in English from the University of North Carolina—Charlotte (UNCC). Additionally, she earned her Master’s Degree in Library Science from the University of North Carolina— Greensboro (UNCG). Janet also holds a National Board Teaching Certificate in Library Media, and is currently certified in grades 6-8 Language Arts, grades 9-12 English, and grades K-12 Library Media. Janet has taught adjunct English classes for Stanly Community College since 2003, and has taught adjunct college classes at Vance-Granville Community College, Caldwell Community College, Appalachian State University, and Mayland Community College. For the past five years, she has held the position as part-time librarian at SCC; and for the past 13 years, she has taught full-time English at Stanly Early College. Janet is passionate about travelling. She has led school groups on trips to England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Austria, Ireland, Scotland, and Italy. She enjoys time with husband Hardin Ross and three cats at home in Albemarle. She is busy helping her son Carl (a Stanly Early College and Stanly Community College alumnus) prepare for his wedding this fall.
