Albemarle, NC— Stanly Community College (SCC) has joined a growing list of colleges and universities across North Carolina and the nation that are postponing and considering new options for spring commencement ceremonies as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a memo to employees on March 23, Dr. John Enamait, SCC president, shared that the college had remained hopeful that COVID-19 would dissipate before May commencement, but the likelihood of that happening diminishes each day. “Therefore, our May 7 commencement ceremony has been postponed until further notice. Our goal is to be able to hold a ceremony; we want to celebrate with our students and their families,” Enamait added.
If circumstances with the pandemic allow, SCC hopes to have a ceremony before the start of the fall semester. SCC’s fall semester classes are currently scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17.
“If our ability to gather for a commencement celebration has not yet been lifted by early July, we will develop a virtual ceremony,” Enamait said. “This ceremony will leverage SCC’s superior technological abilities and will recognize each student who complete his/her credential.” If a virtual ceremony is developed, students and their families will be able to view the ceremony on the college SCC-TV channel, and the college’s YouTube channel.
Dr. Enamait encourages all students and their families to stay engaged with the college through the college’s COVID-19 response page: https://www.stanly.edu/COVID-19 and through the college’s social media platforms.
“We want everyone to know that we appreciate their patience during this time,” Enamait said. “We are all experiencing unchartered territory and we will overcome and emerge stronger because we are all working together. Even though we are all working remotely, we are still providing quality instruction, student support, tutoring, etc. – all the award-winning factors that make SCC one of the greatest colleges in the nation. We are open for business and we will continue to be the source for education and skills-training that our community needs.”
